Most of the residential development in Parkallen occurred before 1960. Today, the single-family homes that set the tone for living standards decades ago continue to serve the populace with retrofitted features and increased access to amenities, such as the nearby Southgate Shopping Centre. 

Notably, one of the borough's most prominent neighbours isn't even a retail mecca or natural landmark. Parkallen shares its western border with the University of Alberta farm, a well-respected agricultural research institution. Although most of the locals may not be interested in strengthening their pastoral knowledge, having this establishment nearby means that there's only so much urban expansion to contend with. Edmonton planners are famous for their love of smooth zoning transitions, so this low- to medium-density mature area has a high chance of remaining fittingly calm and accessible.
