Summer in Edmonton is one of the best places to be in the world. The River Valley blossoms and the city seems to come alive with people and events. In fact, Edmonton recently picked up the nickname of Canada’s Festival City due to all of the world-class events that take place here over the summer months. Here are the top five things we are most excited to do over the summer in Edmonton:

1. Free Will Shakespeare Festival

From June 21 – July 17 the Heritage Amphitheatre in Hawrelak Park is taken over by the works of William Shakespeare. This annual production is presented by the Freewill Shakespeare Players, a not-for-profit theatre group in Edmonton, which has been giving our city a taste of Shakespeare since 1989.

This year, the festival’s theme is ‘the summer of love’ and will feature Romeo and Juliet and Love’s Labour’s Lost. Catching some Shakespeare in a beautiful outdoor setting is truly magical, so if you haven’t visited this festival be sure to make room for it in your calendar this year. Details and ticket information for The Freewill Shakespeare Festival can be found here.

2. Whyte Avenue Art Walk

Filled with fantastic restaurants, charming cafés, and exciting nightlife, Whyte Avenue is always a great spot to hit during the summer months. From July 8 -10, Edmonton’s most famous avenue is also home to the Whyte Avenue Art Walk, which features over 450 visual artists in live-action.

Stroll through 4km of art by some of Alberta’s finest artists. You’re sure to find something you’ll love to hang on the walls of your new home! One of the best things about this event? No admission fee.

3. Taste of Edmonton

For the last 32 years, Taste of Edmonton has been showcasing some of our city’s most delicious eats. This taste bud-pleasing event is happening in Churchill Square from July 21-30, so head down to the heart of the city with your appetite to sample some fine cuisine from Edmonton’s outstanding restaurants.

Taste of Edmonton has grown into Canada’s largest food festival, and the 10-day event also features beer, wine, and an impressive line-up of live music every evening. Notable guests include Born Rufians, Ben Caplan, The Watchmen, Prozzak, Shawn Desman, and more!

4. Edmonton Folk Music Festival

Each year the Edmonton Folk Music Festival seems to outdo itself and this year is no different. This beloved music festival has been taking place in Edmonton since 1980 and has since become one of the leading folk music festivals in the world and likely the event that Edmontonians look forward to the most each year.

Now boasting seven stages, this festival is a music lover's dream with outdoor performances from chart topping artists. Grab your blanket and your friends, and head over to Gallagher Park from August 4-7!  Click here for tickets, schedule, and festival details.

5. Edmonton Fringe Festival

Fringe Theatre Adventures is hosting the 35th Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival from August 11-21. Held within the scenic streets of Old Strathcona, the festival features Outdoor Performers, Artisans and Vendors  - plus over 1,600 live theatre performances by almost 40 venues.

This 11-day event is one of Edmonton’s most beloved summer festivals, which showcases our city’s deep appreciation for theatre and the arts. Whether you’re enjoying some street performances or taking in some live theatre, the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival is sure to impress.
